Description
This Bike Trailer Adapter fits, among others, Shimano Nexus, Shimano Alfine, and Shimano Coasting hubs. These hubs are common on several electric bikes and can often be identified by the axle on the bike being fixed, with a nut that fits on from both sides.
It’s the axle and the mounting surface on the bike where the hitch is to be installed that determines whether you need an adapter for your bike.

Typically, on bikes where this adapter fits, you can mount the hitch without it, but it does not sit satisfactorily.
Some common challenges this adapter solves:
- Loose Hitch: The hitch on the bike trailer tends to loosen easily, requiring constant retightening.
- Improved Stability: We find that the axle and bike trailer hitch stay significantly better positioned with this adapter.
- Note: It is recommended to check and retighten periodically. Always ensure the hitch is secure before connecting the bike trailer, and always use the trailer’s secondary security feature.
- Frame Space: The “hood” or slot in the frame where the axle sits (also called “dropout”) may prevent the bike hitch from fitting flush against the bike frame.
- Adapter Shape: The shape of the adapter fits into all the dropouts we have tested, and once mounted, it provides a good base for attaching all types of bike hitches to the trailer.
- Diameter: 20mm (about 0.79 inches)
- Proximity Issues: Bike trailer hitch and coupling may come too close and interfere with brakes, wheels, or the frame of the bike.
- Extension: The adapter extends the hitch 28mm (about 1.1 inches) further from the bike.
- Short Axle Issue: The bike’s axle may be too short when the bike trailer hitch is mounted.
- Nut Replacement: The adapter replaces the “nut” on the axle, allowing it to be mounted directly on the existing axle. The bike trailer hitch is then mounted on this. See the video below for installation instructions.
